Summary

Since Mike Mignola’s Hellboy first hit the stands in 1993, it has become a cultural sensation, racking up a dozen Eisner Awards and inspiring numerous spinoffs, from a novel line, to video games, to feature films。 Now, Dark Horse is pleased to present the comics that started it all, collected in deluxe hardcover editions。 Sized at 9" by 12", and handsomely bound to match The Art of Hellboy hardcover, each volume contains two full story-arcs — the equivalent of two trade-paperbacks。 Each volume of the Hellboy Library Editions also includes extensive supplemental materials, including previously unreleased sketches and designs。

Hellboy Library Edition Volume 1 collects the first two story-arcs — Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil — with the original introductions by Robert Bloch and Alan Moore and expanded Mignola sketchbook sections。

I already own the two volumes collected here in paperback and I've read them both multiple times。 I bought this more to continue my collection of the library editions, but I'll gladly take any excuse to read these stories again。 Seed of Destruction will seem familiar to fans of the first Hellboy movie as it inspired many aspects of that film。 It's a great introduction to the character and jumping off point for the world that would only grow and expand over the years。 The artwork is the real draw I already own the two volumes collected here in paperback and I've read them both multiple times。 I bought this more to continue my collection of the library editions, but I'll gladly take any excuse to read these stories again。 Seed of Destruction will seem familiar to fans of the first Hellboy movie as it inspired many aspects of that film。 It's a great introduction to the character and jumping off point for the world that would only grow and expand over the years。 The artwork is the real draw with this part of the story。 Mignola establishes the aesthetic of his universe here。 However, Wake The Devil is where things truly come into their own。 The legend goes that with Seed, Mignola had John Byrne script his story idea because he wasn't confident in his own writing。 By the time of Wake The Devil, his confidence grew and he was now the sole writer, and the book is better for it。 That's not a knock on Byrne, his work is great, but Wake is very clearly the product of Mignola's singular vision。 Narrative captions are greatly reduced and the story is told more through the [fantastic] art。 。。。more

First time reading Hellboy and I gotta say its awesome。 First off, I've always been a big fan of Mike Mignola's artwork。 Even though this was my first time reading his work, I've always looked at his artwork and admired it。 Mike to me is in my top 5 artist。 His style is so unique and his own。 I think its iconic and stands as one of those styles that a lot of other artist try and mimic。 Writing wise he's not too bad either。 He builds a world so interesting and deep it just has you craving for mor First time reading Hellboy and I gotta say its awesome。 First off, I've always been a big fan of Mike Mignola's artwork。 Even though this was my first time reading his work, I've always looked at his artwork and admired it。 Mike to me is in my top 5 artist。 His style is so unique and his own。 I think its iconic and stands as one of those styles that a lot of other artist try and mimic。 Writing wise he's not too bad either。 He builds a world so interesting and deep it just has you craving for more。 He does the same with his characters。 From the supporting cast, to our main protagonist。 I just love the concept of Hellboy and this vol will let you know the character enough, but still have you asking questions and making you want more。 I think Mike doing the writing and art is perfect, as there are times where he goes on a bit with the dialogue and narrating, but is saved by his gorgeous artwork。 Even a simple conversations is amazing to look at。 You for sure have to pay attention to his writing as he doesn't just give you action。 All in all this was an awesome read。 。。。more

The art and story in this aged so well。 Was flabbergasted when I realized this was early 90s。 I didn’t discover hellboy until the first Guillermo Del Toro movie and assumed it was only a few years old at that point。 Phenomenal style。

Beautiful art。 Amazing story。 Truly beginning a great saga with a bang!

The stories are nice, but it’s the artwork that makes this a graphic novel you’d want to own, and not just read。Nearly every panel is frame-worthy, and I’m now an even bigger fan of Mike Mignola’s signature style。

Great way to consume the series。 Big fan of oversized collections。 The extras at the back with extra lore stuff was fun, but it’s not a reason to pick up this version versus others, absolutely the thick stock pages and large format is the only real reason。 I really liked both collected trades in this and have been told it only gets better, so I’m pretty excited to see what the series has to offer if this isn’t that great。 Some better dialogue and less tropey interactions/story beats could easily Great way to consume the series。 Big fan of oversized collections。 The extras at the back with extra lore stuff was fun, but it’s not a reason to pick up this version versus others, absolutely the thick stock pages and large format is the only real reason。 I really liked both collected trades in this and have been told it only gets better, so I’m pretty excited to see what the series has to offer if this isn’t that great。 Some better dialogue and less tropey interactions/story beats could easily turn these books into 5 star reads, for me。 。。。more

I think not。)。 Of course, this has a sturdy sewn binding and tons of cool extras--artwork, character studies, and letters from Mignola and others detailing Hellboy's origin as a random "I wanted to draw a demon at a con" drawing。 This is definitely a fantastic value。 。。。more

This was my first introduction to reading a comic。 It took me a while to figure out the conventions, to read the panels in the right order, and many other things I've forgotten, but by the end, I was hooked and needed to know what happened to Hellboy in the rest of his story。Without giving anything away about particular stories, I love that Hellboy is a rather world-weary normal guy, despite his being a demon creature from Hell。 He has a charming propensity to be constantly being thrown through This was my first introduction to reading a comic。 It took me a while to figure out the conventions, to read the panels in the right order, and many other things I've forgotten, but by the end, I was hooked and needed to know what happened to Hellboy in the rest of his story。Without giving anything away about particular stories, I love that Hellboy is a rather world-weary normal guy, despite his being a demon creature from Hell。 He has a charming propensity to be constantly being thrown through a floor by whatever massive evil thing he is fighting, (or punched through a floor, whatever), falling upside down with his cute little feet in the air。 I'm also a fan of the way that Mike Mignola draws sculpture and architecture。 There's something truly beautiful about the details he adds for mood and beauty。 I'm not a comic book person, or a horror person, but I'd actually recommend the whole series。 。。。more

I read Seed of Destruction when it originally was released and as much as I love Mignola's artwork, the story didn't really grab me。 Reading this now, decades later, I like it a little more, but it still isn't grabbing me。 The inside is beautiful to look at, and this Library Edition is fantastic。 I read Seed of Destruction when it originally was released and as much as I love Mignola's artwork, the story didn't really grab me。 Reading this now, decades later, I like it a little more, but it still isn't grabbing me。 The inside is beautiful to look at, and this Library Edition is fantastic。 。。。more

Hellboy is an awesome comicbook。 And not because it's art is phenomenal or it's scripts are extraordinary and original, but it's fresh and different with Mignola paying real good attention to detail and accuracy in every aspect of the story。 The narration is idiosyncratic, unique with comical element present but in right doses。 I'm happy I finally started this after all these years i've been conversing about it。 I'm really excited also to have all the library editions, it's a pleasure to read it Hellboy is an awesome comicbook。 And not because it's art is phenomenal or it's scripts are extraordinary and original, but it's fresh and different with Mignola paying real good attention to detail and accuracy in every aspect of the story。 The narration is idiosyncratic, unique with comical element present but in right doses。 I'm happy I finally started this after all these years i've been conversing about it。 I'm really excited also to have all the library editions, it's a pleasure to read it in that format。 。。。more
